NOW PLAYING: Top o' th' Madness to Ye!

15 March, 2000
Yes, it's college basketball tournament time again. "March Madness," to the cognoscenti. It means butts on couches, chips, dips & beer and the furious filling-out of brackets for the office pool.

lucky charms?

The Wife and I have our own little competition, though I don't know what the stakes are this year. I won last year, though I don't remember what the stakes were then, either -- it doesn't really matter. We just enjoy the whole thing.

It's a little more fun when there's a team we can really pull for in the tourney -- the Tar Heels don't have a prayer this year, so we'll likely end up rooting for whichever "Cinderella team" emerges. There's always an underdog that gets on a tear, and it's fun to see that happen.

I've picked a couple of them:

  • #12 St. Bonaventure over #5 Kentucky -- there's been a #5 seed upset for the past several years, and I think the Wildcats are vulnerable.

  • Pepperdine beats Indiana -- I hope Bob Knight doesn't toss any chairs my way for that pick!

  • I've got Temple going to the Final Four, beating Duke in the semis

There are a couple more "minor" upsets that I've picked -- some #7 seeds getting beat by some #10s, but I'm not certain that's too much of a stretch. Here are the rest of my Final Four picks:

  • Arizona
  • Michigan State
  • Temple
  • Stanford

Michigan State to beat Stanford in the championship game.

We'll see what happens. I'll add an update to this after it's all over.
