NOW PLAYING: FarmBoy

Ah, the simple pleasures of working the earth with your own hands. The fresh, delicious taste of homegrown vegetables. The bugs and diseases and critters that seek to devastate the efforts of your labor.

The garden that we planted in May is yielding its bounty. Or, more exactly, some of its bounty. What the bugs and the critters didn't get first, that is.

The broccoli and cauliflower plants have been toast for a while. We're not sure what really happened to them, but they just never seemed to take off. The carrot seeds never germinated -- we replaced them with radishes, which did really well, though. The squash plants got gobbled up by some nasty insects. And the corn was raped by racoons (though the bugs had gotten to it, too). The cabbages are still touch-and-go; the green cabbage I think will get fed to the chickens, but we're still holding out hope for the red cabbage.

On the plus side, the tomatoes are terrific! We've got all kinds of peppers -- cayenne, red hot chilis, habaneros, banana peppers, cowhorns, jalapenos and the usual red, green and yellow peppers -- that are doing just great, too. Which means plenty o' fresh, homemade salsa. Yum! Mom brought us some of her canning gear so we will be able to "put some by" for later -- we'll have way more than we can possibly eat as it gets picked.

As mentioned, the radishes were plentiful (too plentiful, actually). The green beans are going well (though the rabbits made a valiant effort to nibble them down when the plants first started), the cucumbers and eggplants look good. The watermelons are wonderful, according to The Wife, who ate half of one for dinner last night.

So we've got some good ideas about what will grow well and what we shouldn't bother with here. We've found some things that we'll need to modify and watch out for with next year's crops, too. And we'll try another fall garden in the next couple of weeks, to see if we have a little better results than we got out of it last time. (I think we tried it a wee bit too late last year...)
