NOW PLAYING: ...and Baby Makes Three

13 September, 2002
It's been a long, long, long time since I've posted anything here, I know. I imagine that most of the readers of this site will know exactly why that is, but if you're a newcomer (or just a casual, unknown visitor) you may not know that The Wife and I have been blessed with a wonderful little boy.

The Boy

Dalton Van Charlson was born on June 24, and of course, our lives have been forever changed. The past almost-three months have been amazing, watching The Boy change almost daily — going from a Tiny Baby-Blob to a Little Guy who smiles, babbles and coos, holds his head up, wants to sit up and has suddenly discovered that he has hands. Sure, he has his fussy times, but he's a baby — crying is his job.

The dogs have been slow to warm up to him, especially Annie. Jessie sulked and wouldn't have anything to do with The Wife for a while, but the Old Dog is back to her Old Self now. Annie still seems to wish The Boy would just go away, but in the past few days she apparently has figured out that she'll get much more attention if she sidles up to us, even if Dalton is nearby.

Travel has become a bit more of a production, but overall The Boy seems to have taken to the road quite well, considering. We hauled him down to Key West with both sets of his grandparents (for our 5th wedding anniversary), and we had a fine time (I'll post a travelogue when I get a chance ... don't hold your breath). Of course, our trips have all involved driving, since I wouldn't dream of flying with him. Set aside the fact that the air-pressure changes would probably cause him to scream and cry, and I wouldn't want to inflict that sort of thing on him or on the other passengers; I also flatly refuse to risk having The Boy get an anal probe given by some government airport "security" troglodyte who thinks that a three-month-old infant might somehow hijack an airliner, while they let the bearded passenger named "Abdul" cruise right on through (we can't profile anyone, after all).

But I digress.

We decided long ago that after he was born The Wife would stay home and take care of him (she says there's no way she could send him off to day care), and I've been working from home much more, which I'm thrilled and grateful to be able to do. We make up songs, tell him stories, play games and do all the other things that need to be done for babies, loving every minute of it.

It's going to be an adventure for us all, and I'm looking forward to it.
